La Tortuga, 50 miles west of Margarita, is a gorgeous island with terrific beaches great sailing, windsurfing and kayaking areas. While not quite so far off the beaten track as Isla Blanquilla and Los Testigos, La Tortuga makes up for this with a dazzling array of attractions. There are occasional visits by commmercial fisherman and weekend pleasure boats - and there is one posada. There is excellent fishing both inshore light tackle (lots of bonefish) and offshore for the usual suspects.
Snorkeling and free diving however are perhaps the top attractions of La Tortuga. The entire island is surrounded by a dazzling display of coral reefs and there are also spectacular drop offs for the more adventurous free diver.
